Continuing the Homemade Pledge: Bare Root Designs

Tis the season to start Christmas shopping! We’re continuing our “Homemade Pledge” by highlighting an event this weekend by one of my favorite local artisans: Bare Root Designs.

Here’s a quick story about how small our great town of Des Moines really is….

I first saw Bare Root Designs’ gorgeous jewelry at a coffee shop in Valley Junction while taking Landry‘s 9 month pictures with Mimi & T Photography. I HAD TO HAVE a pair of silver, bird-dangling earrings. Had to.

Then! As fate would have it, our friend Tara Dudley from Plant Life Designs (you know Tara) shares an image of their earrings and plugs their open house on November 10th. Now you know I’m obligated to share this local, homemade goodness with you.

We started Bare Root a few years ago, as a fun adventure for two best friends. We had no idea what the next few years would bring for our little business! Initially, we made about 20 pairs of earrings, invited our coworkers to my house and tentatively showed them our creations, giving them lots of “outs” not to purchase. There was a small frenzy, and soon after, when we looked around the conference table at a meeting, everyone was wearing Bare Root. We then started selling the earrings we made at private trunk shows and business grew! In the last year or two we have focused more on collaborating with small boutiques around the state and the metro. We love supporting small business! The Articles of Incorporation of BRD outlines that we are friends first, business partners second and that the goal is to continue to be good friends and always have fun! It also names us as “co-captains” rather than co-owners of Bare Root because it made us giggle, and that’s what it’s about.

Our aesthetic is “simple.natural.adornment.” We want our designs to be affordable enough for women to own several pairs, and versatile enough to be able to dress up a pony tail and yoga pants, or go out on the town. I think we’ve been successful at that—at least that’s what our customers say!
